How the Olympic Games affects a Country.
With the 2012 Olympics come up London is preparing for it. They are going through major changes in the city of  London, in order to prepare for the games. They are extending under grounds and building new buildings and just making their city ready for such a major worldwide event.
In my project I want to see how a country will be effected if they host the games. In order to do this I have to look at 3 other cities that have hosted the games and see how they prepared and what were the pros and cons of having the games in their country were and did the games effect the country.

My 3 countrys I'm going to look at our..
Beijing, China
Athens, Greece
London, England

Beijing, China

The Beijing Olympics were held in summer 2008. A total of 11,028 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees competed in 28 sports and 302 events.

The Government of the People's Republic of China promoted the Games and invested heavily in new facilities and transportation systems.
A total of 37 venues were used to host the events including 12 constructed for use at the Games. This brought the costs of the games up massively.

What Beijing did to prepare for the games.
The Chinese government renovated and constructed six venues outside Beijing as well as 59 training centres.Almost 85% of the construction budget for the six main venues was funded by $2.1 billion corporate bids and tenders.

The centrepiece of the 2008 Summer Olympics was the Beijing National Stadium, nicknamed "The Bird's Nest" because of its nest-like skeletal structure. The stadium hosted both the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the athletics competition.

It cost $423 million to construct.

Transport in Beijing changed completely, There subway was expanded greatly, they added a new terminal on to the 2nd largest airport in the world. They had fleets of thousands of cars, buses and mini buses to and from each stadium and airport.

Beijing changed its entire city and surroundings in order to prepare for the Olympic games. 4.7 billion viewers worldwide tuned in to watch The games.
The total cost of the 2008 Beijing Olympics was $40 billion.

Athens, Greece

In the 2004  Olympics in Athens Greece 10,625 athletes competed, some 600 more than expected, accompanied by 5,501 team officials from 201 countries.

How Athens Prepared for the games.

A Spanish Architect named Santiago Calatrava planned the plans of the Olympics sports centre for the games in Athens. This stadium was completed with a retractable glass roof, It was used for the opening and closing ceremony. Athens had a rush as they were behind schedule on many of their projects such as a new tram line but they made it in time and had all venues ready for the opening of the games. 14 people died during the building of these facilitys, most of these people were not from greece.

For the first time, major broadcasters were allowed to serve video coverage of the Olympics over the Internet, The games were on TV 24 hours a day on one network or another.

Approximately 70,000 police officers patrolled Athens and the Olympic venues during the Olympics.

In the years leading up to the Games, Athens was transformed into a city that used state-of-the-art technology in transportation and urban development.
Some of the most modern sporting venues in the world at the time were built to host the 2004 Olympic Games.

In June 2004, the BBC reported that the costs of hosting Olympic Games were close to $11.2  billion.

We have now seen how The Olympic games affects a country by looking at two most recent country's to hold the games. Each country and city had to go through major changes and construction to host the games, each games cost over a ten billion dollars. So we now see that when hosting the games it needs to be a well off country that is willing to spend high amounts of money in order to host the games.

Although its not just spending money, The Olympics brings a lot of money into a country also, millions of people from around the world will come to see the games and with that they will bring a lot of money with them, if they are spending it on tickets for the games, travel, accommodation, restaurants, shops or just spending money on tourists attractions they are still bringing money into the country.
This is always good for a country, bringing high amounts of tourists in. So hosting the games may cost a lot of money but it also brings money in and changes the city and the country a lot, changing travel and stadiums, this affects the country and the people living there.

Now in July London, England will be holding the 2012 Olympic Games, I will now look at how they are preparing for the games and how much money has been already spent and will these games be as successful and expensive as the others, I also want to see what has changed in the country since they have started to prepare for the games.
